2018 Organizing Team

Michelle Liu

Michelle is the founder and co-chair of Analytics By Design. She currently works as a Senior Agile Project Manager (Advanced Analytics) at Scotiabank, overseeing rapid labs and pushing the digital-first agenda of the bank. Her team develops cutting-edge analytical solutions by leveraging AI and machine learning techniques. Prior to banking, Michelle was a former consultant at Deloitte where she strengthened the digital and analytics capabilities of large financial institutions and organizations in the public sector. Michelle was elected the co-president of the Master of Management Analytics (MMA) class of 2018. She holds a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM).

Alethea Yi

Alethea is the program design and finance lead for the Analytics by Design Conference. She currently works at Deloitte as a senior auditor, primarily focused on the manufacturing, consumer products, and financial industries. She is passionate about implementation of fast-growing technology in business and joined as a member of Deloitte Amplify group. She was also interviewed for Deloitte's Fast 50 Program in 2017. Alethea holds a Master in Accounting and Bachelor of Mathematics, Finance minor from the University of Waterloo. She is also a CA, CPA candidate who has completed all designation requirements as of the start of 2018.

Tomiwa Omololu

Tomiwa is a marketing and logistics lead on the Analytics By Design Conference. He currently works at Mars Wrigley Confectionery in a Category Management role, and is passionate about the adoption of Analytics in the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry. His focus is on uncovering Consumer and Shopper Insights in GPG by employing analytical techniques on both structured and unstructured data. Tomiwa is experienced in both manufacturing and retail businesses, having worked on businesses like Coca-Cola and Walmart during his 4 years at Nielsen. Outside of his career, he is a volunteer tutor, die hard Arsenal fan, and an avid music lover. Tomiwa is a Master's of Management Analytics candidate for the class of 2018 at Queen's University's Smith School of Business, and holds a B.A in Economics from McMaster University.

Jeremy Fajardo

Jeremy primarily supports the ABD team's marketing and technology efforts, wearing the different hats when needed. Professionally, Jeremy holds a similar multi-disciplinary role at Flipp as a Data Analyst on the Solutions team – working to drive digital pioneering efforts and support client onboarding for the company's most strategic partners. In what little free time he has, he spends it watching Netflix while tweaking half-finished models and reading Medium articles.

Nabeel Khan

Nabeel Khan is a sponsorship lead for the Analytics by Design Conference. Nabeel is currently the Commercial Excellence Leader at GE Healthcare. GE Healthcare provides transformational medical technologies and services that are shaping a new age of patient care. Nabeel is responsible for developing commercial strategies using analytics and market insights to help drive better outcomes for GE Healthcare’s customers. He is also involved in the strategic process for launching new product and service introductions into Canada. Nabeel is at the forefront of GE’s digital transformation and works closely with global colleagues to leverage best practices to bring to the Canadian market. Nabeel has been at GE Healthcare for over 8 years and held roles in account management for Western Canada, operations, pricing and finance. He holds an MBA and BCom from the Schulich School of Business and York University. He is a Master’s of Management Analytics (MMA) candidate 2018 at the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University.

Sam Behnood

Sam is a sponsorship lead working diligently to secure assets and give life to the inaugural Analytics by Design Toronto-based conference. In his career, he leverages his project management and technical expertise to lead analytics projects designed to inform the strategic priorities of Metrolinx - Ontario's provincial transportation authority. He has been integral to developing the analytics competency of the Customer Experience & Marketing division within his organization, and has been a champion of cross-functional collaboration to generate deep insights that drive the Customer Experience strategy. Prior to Metrolinx, Sam was a Project Manager in the public sector where he led projects through a customer-centric lens; balancing priorities and objectives while delivering solutions aligned to customer needs. Philosophical challenges of socially accepted norms and an incessant desire to hold intellectual and opinion-driven debates on real-world issues are his passions, often marking him as the respected black-sheep among his peers and colleagues. Sam is a Master's of Management Analytics candidate for the class of 2018 at Queen's University, and he holds a Bachelor of Engineering from McMaster University.

Hakim Garuba

Hakim is a co-chair for the Analytics by Design Conference and currently an Account Manager at Google. He holds a Master of Management Analytics degree from the Smith School of Business at Queen's University and is the co-President of the Class of 2017. He also holds a Masters in Project Management. Hakim has over 5 years of digital marketing experience having worked as a Growth Marketer for StackAdapt, a Marketing Automation Specialist for Nokia, and a Paid Search & Digital Marketing Specialist (and Marketing Analyst) for Halogen Software. He is also a Marketo Certified Expert and SAS Predictive Modeler. When he isn't at his regular 9-5, he enjoys producing music under the name Dimple Delivery. His interests include, football (the real footy), music, fitness training, and all things tech!

Diljot Chhina

Diljot is a marketing lead for the Analytics by Design Conference. She is currently a Digital Marketing Strategist at Klick Health, the world's largest independent healthcare agency, and also completing her Master's in Management Analytics at Queen's University. She is also a B.Sc graduate from the University of Waterloo, specializing in Biotechnology and Economics. With her background in science and business, Diljot enjoys working on diverse projects that marry technology, user experience design, and analytics in the realm of healthcare. In 2015, she was selected for a research fellowship in San Francisco with Rock Health, the first venture fund dedicated to digital health and had her work on gender diversity profiled in mobihealthnews and Outside of her work, she enjoys playing soccer and cooking the next meal uploaded on

Aaron Zhang

Aaron Zhang joined the Analytics By Design team out of his passion for data analytics and its potential to enable the transformation of the financial services industry. Aaron works at the Royal Bank of Canada as a manager in Strategy and Transformation Services. He graduated from the INSEAD MBA program with distinction last December. Prior to INSEAD, Aaron worked in the management consulting and financial services industries for many years and received his CFA designation. In his leisure time, Aaron enjoys meditation and learning the philosophy of life. Watch out for his smiles, as they can be contagious.

ABD 2018 Organizing Team

Analytics by Design is a not-for-profit organization that was initiated by a group of graduate students from the Masters of Management of Analytics Program at the Smith School of Business then quickly expanded to Toronto’s business community with addition of enthusiastic working professionals who are interested in emerging technology, design and analytics.

In partnership with Queen's University, our mandate is to foster a culture that does not solely focus on the code, back-end infrastructure or technicalities, but also the practical application and new business opportunities that are at the intersection of design-thinking, innovation and analytics, to empower end-users to leverage analytics. This includes artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotic process automation, business intelligence and much more.

Our goal is to build a community of data scientists, data engineers, analytics project managers, consultants and design experts.
